What Is Tata Motors?

Tata Motors is an Indian automotive manufacturer headquartered in Mumbai and owned by the conglomerate Tata Group which is involved in industries as diverse as hospitality, steel, and telecommunications. Here is how Jaguar fits into the mix:

  1. In 2008, Tata Motors purchased both Jaguar Cars and Land Rover. Both brands joined forces and became Jaguar Land Rover Limited in 2013.
  2. Tata Motors owns several other automotive operations worldwide in the commercial vehicle segment and the passenger vehicle segment.
  3. Tata Motors belongs to Tata Group, which has its beginnings as a trading company all the way back in 1868. Even in its early days, Tata Group was an innovator, developing the first hotel in India that offered electricity in 1907, constructing the first hydro powerplant in Western India, and establishing the Indian Institute of Science in 1911.

Who Owned Jaguar?

The Jaguar brand dates back to 1922 when William Lyons and William Walmsley started what was then known as the Swallow Sidecar Company in Blackpool, England. Not long after, the company changed its name to S.S. Cars Limited. In 1935 a sports saloon model (a.k.a. a sports sedan) called the SS Jaguar was released, alongside the SS Jaguar 100, an open-top two-passenger sports car. See how these models have transformed into the Jaguar vehicles we know and love today.

  1. In 1945, the S.S. Cars underwent another name change to Jaguar Cars Limited.
  2. Jaguar made a name for itself in the sports cars segment with offerings such as the Jaguar XK120 and Jaguar E-TYPE, as well as for international motorsports. The brand took the top spot in the 1951 and 1953 Le Mans 24-Hour Race.
  3. In 1965, Jaguar Cars became part of British Motor Holdings Limited, which later merged with the Rover manufacturer Leyland Motor Corporation Limited, creating the British Leyland Motor Corporation.
  4. Because of financial difficulties, the British Leyland Motor Corporation nationalized in 1975. Jaguar was once again its own company in 1984.
  5. In 1999, Jaguar was purchased by Ford and subsequently purchased Land Rover in 2000. Both brands were sold to Tata Motors in 2008.

Who Makes Jaguar?

You will find the Jaguar Land Rover headquarters approximately two hours north of London in Coventry. There are two design centers and three manufacturing plants across the United Kingdom that make both genuine Jaguar and Land Rover models, while the Halewood location near Liverpool primarily makes Land Rover models.
