There are plenty of reasons you might need to change a tire. Perhaps you notice there’s not enough tread left, or maybe you find yourself on the side of the road with a flat. It’s a vital skill every driver should learn, so how do you change a car tire?

To prevent you from having to wait for assistance in the breakdown lane between Scottsdale and Phoenix, or driving around Peoria on unsafe tires, we’ve put together a quick and easy guide.

How Do You Change a Car Tire?

If possible, move your vehicle to a safe location. Look for level ground on a straight stretch of road. Then make sure you have a jack, lug wrench, spare tire, and your owner’s manual before turning on your hazards, applying the parking brake, and following these steps:

  1. Apply wheel wedges to prevent rolling.
  2. Remove the wheel cover or hubcap to expose the lug nuts.
  3. Loosen the lug nuts.
  4. Put your jack under the vehicle and raise it. Never put any part of your body under the vehicle after it has been raised.
  5. Unscrew the lug nuts.
  6. Remove the flat by gripping it at the treads and pulling it gently towards you.
  7. Put the spare tire on the lug bolts, then push gently until they show through the rim.
  8. Tighten the lugs by hand.
  9. Lower the car, then tighten the lugs with your wrench.
  10. Replace the hubcap or wheel cover.

Once you’re done, remember to check the pressure of the spare to ensure it’s safe to drive on. You’ll then want to visit a technician to have the spare tire replaced with one meant for driving long distances – remember, spares aren’t ever meant to be permanent, and you shouldn’t go more than 50 mph while one is on your vehicle!

How Often to Change Car Tires in Phoenix

You’ll obviously need to change a flat, but that’s not the only time. How often tires need to be changed depends on how you drive, how well your tires are made, and how often you have them rotated, but you’ll generally be fine simply following the intervals set out in your owner’s manual, and rotating your tires according to schedule. Check the pressure and tread regularly just to be safe.

Changing car tires, much like changing your brakes, is a pretty time-consuming process in a home garage. We recommend you leave it to the professionals.
